Painted artwork features in maori art both in the past and in the present. Traditional painted arts of the maori people, the Kowhaiwhai have been explored and developed over many years. Following the tradition of combining styles and media in which raranga (weaving), whaikairo (carving), Kirituhi (body art), whakapapa (history) are prominent, to form present day kowhaiwhai art. At first, kowhaiwhai patterns can be viewed as a means of decoration only, but closer examination reveals sophisticated mathematical precision involving symmetry, rotation, reflection and translation. It can be observed within , repetition, the balance of colour and positive and negative shapes in Kowhaiwhai design.
